  • You can eat and drink as normal before the examination
  • You can take any regular medication – but we would like you to bring a list of any that you are taking.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. We’ll be asking you to remove any clothing that covers your abdomen, so do make sure that whatever you’re wearing can be taken off easily.
  • You’re welcome to bring a friend or a relative with you, but they will be allowed in the examination room only in special circumstances.
  • Once you’ve checked in at reception (don’t forget to bring your appointment letter), a Sonographer (the medical professional who operates the ultrasound equipment) will meet you and explain the procedure.
  • We’ll ask you to lie flat on an examination bed.
  • You won’t need an injection.
  • We’ll put a cool, water-based gel on the skin over the area that’s going to be scanned. This will help the sensor slide easily over your skin. Foetal ultrasound scans don’t cause any pain or discomfort.
  • The scan takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
  • There are no restrictions on normal activity – you can eat and drink normally, drive and return to work immediately after the scan.
  • We’ll prepare a report and send it to your doctor or consultant, usually some five working days after the scan.
  • Your doctor will discuss the findings with you.
  • Scan are performed by qualified foetal ultra-sonographers and are reported on by Consultant Obstetricians, Professor Fergal Malone MD, FACOG, FRCOG, FRCPI and Professor Seán Daly, MD, MRCOG, FRCPI.
